I have just been invited to assist at one of the Battle of Britain Sunday Civic Services which will take place at both Windsor Parish Church and St Mary’s Church, Maidenhead on Sunday 15 September 2013 at 11.00 am. The Mayor Cllr Andrew Jenner will be attending the service in Maidenhead and the Deputy Mayor, Councillor John Lenton, will be attending the Windsor Service.
Both My Dad and Grandad were RAF veterans so I will be thinking of them in particular on the day. Granada was actually in the RFC and then the RAF during the first world war, fixing the engines of the early fighter aircraft. Dad was too young to be a part of the Battle of Britain, but joined up in the later years of WWII and was stationed at RAF Northholt and then was shipped out to the Cocos Islands.
Locally of course we had Sidney Camm born in the borough. He designed the Hawker Hurricane; 601 of which were lost during the battle. This will be a solemn event to remember the sacrifice of the men and women who died during the turbulent days of the summer and autumn of 1940. I feel really proud and grateful to be asked to attend this event.
Both Windsor and Maidenhead have sights of interest for thise interested in the battle. These include a full scale Hurricane replica on Barry Avenue in Windsor while in Maidenhead the ATA museum has a Spitfire Simulator.
